Richard Abbott, Thomas Smedinghoff, Lucy Thomson
An attorney and consultant operating out of Vancouver, Richard Abbott’s practice focuses on compliance, governance and practical security. An expert on anonymity, countersurveillance and politically motivated hacking, he works with companies to secure against both pedestrian and advanced threats. An advocate for free and open source solutions, Abbott is a Co-Chair of the ABA's Information Security Committee and is a former Chair of the Copyright and New Technologies Committee. Richard also teaches law within a computer forensics program at the British Columbia Institute of Technology.
Thomas J. Smedinghoff is Of Counsel in the Privacy & Cybersecurity Law practice at Locke Lord LLP, in Chicago. He is internationally recognized for his leadership in addressing emerging legal issues regarding identity management, e-transactions, data security, and digital signature authentication from both a transactional and public policy perspective. He is Chair of the American Bar Association (ABA) Identity Management Legal Task Force and a member of the ABA Cybersecurity Legal Task Force. He is also a member of the US Delegation to the UN Commission on International Trade Law, where he helped to negotiate the UN Convention on the Use of Electronic Communications in International Contracts. He also wrote the Illinois Electronic Commerce Security Act.
Lucy Thomson, Esq., CISSP, CIPP/US/G, focuses her legal practice on cybersecurity, global data privacy, and compliance and risk management. Appointed Consumer Privacy Ombudsman in 20 major bankruptcy cases, she has overseen the sale of 240 million consumer records. A career Justice Department Attorney, she litigated complex white collar crime cases and drafted legislation and policy in the Criminal Division. Working as a Senior Engineer at CSC, a global technology company, she was appointed a DHS ISSO. A Past Chair of the American Bar Association (ABA) Section of Science & Technology Law, she is a member of the ABA Cybersecurity Legal Task Force and Editor of the ABA Data Breach and Encryption Handbook. She earned a master’s degree from RPI and holds a J.D. degree from Georgetown.
